REFORMER PILATES
BOUTIQUE | CONTEMPORARY
what is reformer pilates?
Reformer Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise performed on a Reformer bed with springs & a sliding carriage that provides adjustable resistance, making it gentle on the joints while still building strength, improving flexibility, and enhancing core control. Since movements are slow, controlled, and easily modified, it is suitable for most body types, fitness levels, & even those recovering from moderate injury. Joseph Pilates originally developed the Reformer bed during World War I by adapting hospital beds with springs to help injured soldiers regain movement - the method he first called Contrology is guided by core principles such as breathing, concentration, control, centering, precision, and smooth, flowing motion. Fast forward to our world as we know it today, Contemporary-style Reformer Pilates is the modern evolution of Contrology, & it adapts his original principles to fit today’s understanding of movement, fitness, and rehabilitation; while still focusing on core strength, control, and flow, Reformer Pilates incorporates current exercise science, physical therapy techniques, and functional movement patterns; making it more accessible, varied, and tailored to individual needs.
“Change happens through movement, and movement heals.”
about
Our Story
Studio Kaya is Picton’s first official boutique Reformer Pilates studio, offering private & intimate group sessions of up to five. Designed as a refined & welcoming space, it invites locals & visitors alike, to cultivate core strength, enhance mobility, strengthen the mind-body connection & experience the benefits of low-impact movement.
Founded by Dee, Studio Kaya reflects passion for mindful movement & quality instruction. Following over a decade of practicing Yin, Vinyasa & Flow Yoga around the country, the shift in practice turns to Reformer Pilates. Dee holds a 150-hour Reformer Pilates Certification through Australia’s leading training provider, Barre Body & brings solid experience teaching large group classes of up to 16, to personalised 1:1 sessions. At the heart of Dee’s approach is her “why”; a genuine passion for helping people feel at ease within themselves. She believes movement should be a space free of judgement, where you can build a positive relationship with your body, let go of comparison, & grow in confidence. This belief comes from her eight years of experience in Public Service roles, bringing a deep sense of empathy, understanding & genuine connection, helping you fulfill well-being goals.
Not only does she run Studio Kaya as the Instructor, she is also a mum, a wife & a Student Counsellor.
Behind the scenes, Dee’s vision of Studio Kaya was largely supported by her other half, Blenheim local, Jake, who oversees Operations & Studio Management. With extensive background in Global Economic Analysis & Operations Management within the health foods industry, Jake ensures Studio Kaya runs seamlessly, allowing every detail of the client experience to feel considered & effortless.
Together as Studio Kaya, our focus is creating a thoughtful space designed for smaller group settings, delivering a more refined & attentive experience. Prioritising correct form through hands-on tactile cueing & carefully guided movement; the result is a practice that feels both elevated & inclusive. A place where you are welcome as you are.
